May is ‘Correct your posture’ month!

Bad posture can cause a lot of problems! If you slouch, you add extra stress to your muscles and joints. This can eventually lead to arthritis and other problems with your joints. It also deprives your body of oxygen which can make you more tired, which in turn, affects your circulation, digestion and even having a generally negative effect on your attitude.

Firstly, it causes less wear and tear on your joint, bone and muscle alignment. In the long term, this will reduce the amount of back problems, give you more movement in your joints AND for longer. Good posture encourages your muscles to work more efficiently which uses less energy, which provides less fatigue and strain on the muscles. Good posture also encourages good circulation which helps to prevent tingly fingers and toes and helps nutrients that are carried by your circulatory system to your joints, muscles and organs. Lastly, good posture also helps you to stay youthful and be more confident.

Computers can be your worst enemy when it comes to bad posture.
Follow our top tips to help your posture when you are sitting at your desk.

  1. Make sure your chair fits! There should be approximately 5cm between the front edge of the seat and the back of your knees.
  2. Sit with your knees at 90 – 120 degree angle
  3. Position your computer monitor so that the top of the screen is at eye level
  4. Keep your wrists in a neutral (straight) position—not bent up or down.
  5. Take frequent short breaks from your computer. Use this time to stretch your arms, neck and shoulders.
