Western Industrial has been designing, supplying and installing mezzanine floors and business interiors for UK businesses since 1979. Founded by Kevin Moore and Paul Merriam, the company has grown from its roots in the South West into a national business with installation teams operating across England and Wales.
We are a specialist mezzanine floor company with a genuinely complete service. We design each project from first principles, source steelwork that carries UKCA marking in compliance with BS EN 1090, manage the Building Regulations process on our clients’ behalf, and install every floor using our own experienced teams. From initial site survey to completion certificates, one company is responsible throughout.
Our clients range from growing SMEs installing their first 50m² storage mezzanine to national organisations managing complex multi-site fit-outs. We have delivered projects for the NHS, Barclays, B&Q, JVC, Princess Yachts and the Police Service, alongside hundreds of independent businesses across the UK.
What we do
Every mezzanine we supply carries UKCA marking in accordance with BS EN 1090, demonstrating that the structural steelwork has been assessed to the UK’s legal requirements for safety, load-bearing capacity and structural performance.
Alongside our mezzanine installation service, we provide a complete business interior fit-out capability. Many of our clients choose to include additional works within the same contract, which simplifies the project and means one team is accountable for the full scope
Standards and compliance
Every mezzanine floor we supply meets the legal requirements for structural steelwork in Great Britain. The structural steel components carry UKCA marking assessed against BS EN 1090-1, which is the UK’s designated standard for fabricated structural steelwork. UKCA marking confirms that the steelwork has been assessed for conformity with the declared performance characteristics, including load-bearing capacity, structural stability and material traceability, and is fit for its intended use. Mezzanine floors supplied without UKCA-marked steelwork may be unsafe and uninsurable.
We manage the Building Regulations application on behalf of every client as a standard part of our service, at no additional charge. This includes structural engineering calculations, fire strategy drawings where required, and all correspondence with the Building Control Inspector. We work with approved Building Regulations Inspectors and ensure approval is in place before any installation begins on site.
Our installations are designed and installed in accordance with the relevant Approved Documents of the Building Regulations 2010, including:
• Approved Document A — Structure: structural calculations to support safe load-bearing design
• Approved Document B — Fire Safety: fire-rated ceilings and column casings where required, means of escape, fire detection
• Approved Document K — Protection from falling: staircase specification, handrails, edge protection
• Approved Document M — Access and use: staircase dimensions, accessibility requirements for occupied and publicly accessible mezzanines
For more detail on what UKCA marking means for mezzanine floors and why it matters, see our UKCA marking guide. For a full explanation of Building Regulations requirements and the approval process, see our Building Regulations guide.
Our approach
We work with businesses of every size, from a single modest mezzanine floor in a small industrial unit to large-scale, phased fit-out programmes across multiple sites. What does not change between projects is how we work.
Every project starts with a free site survey. We visit your premises, assess the available space and any structural considerations, and talk through what you need the space to do.
We are direct about what is possible, what is required by Building Regulations, and what everything will cost, before you commit to anything.
We produce detailed designs and, where needed, structural calculations, so you can see exactly what you will get before work begins. We apply for Building Regulations approval on your behalf, manage the programme, and keep you informed throughout. When the project is complete, we hand over full documentation, structural certificates, completion records, load plates and Building Regulations sign-off.
We have been doing this since 1979. The people who founded this business are still involved in it. Many of our clients have been with us for years and return to us for every project. We think that says something about how we work.
Where we work
Western Industrial operates nationally across the UK. We are based in Ashburton, Devon, and have strong roots in the South West: Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset and Bristol, where we have been the established local specialist for over four decades.
Our installation teams cover the full country, including London, the South, the Midlands, the North, the North and Wales.
There is no project too small and no location too far. Contact us to discuss your project and we will confirm availability and programme.
