Mezzanine floor

Mezz floor
The informal shortening of mezzanine floor, used freely in the warehousing and logistics sector. Means exactly the same thing. Used in everyday conversation, site surveys, and emails between people who work with mezzanine floors regularly.
Raised storage platform
A broader term covering any elevated platform used for storage, from a simple maintenance access platform to a full mezzanine floor. In common usage it tends to refer to smaller, simpler elevated structures. A mezzanine floor and a raised storage platform both describe elevated steel structures, but a mezzanine typically occupies a significant proportion of the building and requires Building Regulations approval.
Mezzanine deck
Refers specifically to the floor surface of a mezzanine structure, the chipboard, plywood or steel chequer plate laid across the structural joists. Sometimes used informally to mean the whole mezzanine structure.
Elevated platform
A generic term for any structure that creates a raised working or storage level. Covers mezzanine floors, loading dock platforms, maintenance access structures and packing platforms. When used in a commercial or industrial context, usually means a mezzanine floor.
Terms by use type
Storage mezzanine
A mezzanine floor designed and used exclusively for storage: shelving, racking or bulk goods. Storage mezzanine floors that meet the size and use criteria (under 20 metres in any direction, less than half the building floor area, used only for storage or maintenance) may not require fire protection under Building Regulations.
Warehouse mezzanine
A mezzanine floor in a warehouse environment, typically combining storage levels, picking areas and sometimes welfare facilities across one or more levels. Usually requires fire protection because the use combines storage with occupied areas.
Office mezzanine
A mezzanine floor used as office space. Always requires fire protection (fire-rated ceiling, fire-rated column casings, designated means of escape) under Approved Document B. Requires a commercial-grade staircase and balustrade.
Industrial mezzanine
A mezzanine floor in a factory or industrial environment. Designed to higher load ratings (480 to 960 kg/m² or above) and with structural calculations accounting for dynamic loads from forklifts and production machinery.
Retail mezzanine
A customer-facing mezzanine in a shop or retail space. Requires fire protection and premium-grade finishes: glazed balustrade, feature staircase, finished floor surface. Installed around trading hours. Disabled access under Approved Document M needs to be assessed.
Factory mezzanine
A mezzanine floor in a production facility, used for production levels, parts storage, quality control areas or management offices. Installed in phases to minimise production downtime.
Production mezzanine
Equivalent to factory mezzanine. A platform installed within a production facility to create additional working levels for production, assembly or processing operations.
Commercial mezzanine
A broad term covering office, retail, hospitality and other non-industrial mezzanine applications. Distinguishes customer-facing and office environments from warehouse and industrial applications.
Hi-level mezzanine / high-level mezzanine
A mezzanine floor installed at a greater height than standard, typically in buildings with 7 metres or more of internal height. Common in high bay warehouses where picking floors are installed above tall racking systems.

A mezzanine floor with a fire-rated ceiling installed beneath the deck and fire-rated casings on the structural columns. Required for any mezzanine used as an office or occupied workspace. The standard rating is 60 minutes.

Mezzanine floor Approved Document K
Approved Document K of the Building Regulations governs protection from falling, including staircase dimensions, balustrade height (minimum 1,100mm in commercial buildings) and the 100mm infill gap rule. All mezzanine floor installations must comply.
Terms related to components
Mezzanine staircase / mezzanine stairs
The staircase providing access between the ground floor and the mezzanine level. Must comply with Approved Document K: maximum 220mm rise, minimum 220mm going, minimum 2,000mm headroom. Types range from industrial open-grid staircases to commercial open-tread and glazed feature stairs.
Mezzanine balustrade
The edge protection system on all open edges of a mezzanine floor. Minimum height 1,100mm in commercial buildings. Types include industrial mesh, solid panel and glazed. Must be structurally designed to resist the horizontal loads specified in BS 6180.
Mezzanine pallet gate
A counterbalanced safety gate at the pallet loading edge of a mezzanine floor, where a forklift deposits or retrieves pallets. The counterbalanced design ensures continuous edge protection throughout the loading cycle.
Mezzanine flooring / mezz flooring
Refers to the deck surface of a mezzanine floor. Standard specification is P5 moisture-resistant chipboard (38mm). For office and retail environments, a finished surface layer (carpet tile, vinyl, LVT or hardwood) is applied over the structural deck.
